About this saint
Saint Nicholas was a fourth-century bishop of Myra remembered for generous care of people in need. One of the oldest traditions about him tells of a father who could not provide dowries for his three daughters. Nicholas secretly gave the family gold three times and asked that his generosity remain unknown. The three gold balls in this portrait recall those gifts, while his miter and crozier identify him as a bishop. This tradition helped make him a beloved patron of children and young people. The words “Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year” bring that same spirit of generous care into family life. His image is especially fitting in a family room, child’s room, classroom, entryway, or prayer corner.
